I have forgotten many things

The name of my teacher in third grade

How many cracks were on the ceiling above my childhood bed

All the algebra formulas that I never needed

How I got to my friend’s house in North Texas in 1993

Why I wrote scribbles on the wall in lipstick when I was 3

The exact time I decided I wanted my first divorce

When my left knee started aching

Why my mother slammed the door for the hundredth time

Where I left my key that you wanted back

What my aunt was wearing the day she said goodbye

Where I set my glasses five minutes ago

But I will always remember

what my heart cannot forget.

  1. I like your list poem because it's absolutely true what you opening quote says, that we never forget how someone made us feel. Memory is a tricky beast for exact events or exact wordsm but the feelings are down in the bone and we don't--can't--forget that.

  2. Our feelings are important to us. Your list matches mine very well, every one. Your writer remembered when "I decided I wanted my first divorce," I remember when my ex decided she wanted our first divorce. I was ready for it also, but didn't want to say that. But it still hurt really bad, I still loved her after thirteen years and four kids, starting back when we just barely were, or almost were, legally allowed to do it.

  4. This lands right in the center of the chest. By the time I got to the end, it was pulling up half-memories and all the feelings associated with them. Brilliant (aaaaand slightly painful).

  8. This really accumulates impact as it moves down the list, Carrie. There is not a container large enough for everything we forget, but most it is unimportant anyway, as your poem shows us. It happens, we deal, we move on; but the important things move with us, never left behind. Loved it, and thanks for the inspiration at Muse.

Thank you for this wonderful post, I want to use this opportunity to share about My life how I strunggled with Hiv/Aids Disease before the Lord Jesus in my life as a candle light in the darkness. You showed me the meaning of faith with your words. I know that even when I cried all day thinking about how to recover, you were not sleeping, you were dear to me. He prayed for me and asked me to lead. I spent 2 weeks and 2 days in Africa at Dr Itua Herbal Home. After the treatment, he asked me to meet his nurse for the HIV test when I did it. It was negative, I asked my friend to take me to another nearby hospital when I arrived, it was negative. I was overwhite with the result, but happy inside of me. We went with Dr. Itua, I thank him but I explain that I do not have enough to show him my appreciation, that he understands my situation, but I promise that he will testify about his good work. Thank God for my dear friend, Emma, I know I could be reading this now, I want to thank you. And many thanks to Dr. Itua Herbal Center. He gave me his calendar that I put on my wall in my house.
