The Deep End

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. ~Havelock Ellis

Always make sure you know where the deep end is when you choose to dive into life!

It can be dangerous trying to live.

So many ways to break your neck,

and even more ways lead to broken hearts.

I learned long ago that complacency is cruel!

It makes us blind to the potholes,

and forget about reasons for holding to the side.

All the dangers of the shallow end seem so far away.

The reasons we fell in love can evaporate to clouds.

So, always make sure you know where the deep end is when you choose to dive into life.

It can be dangerous trying to live,

but whatever you do, don’t stop searching!

  1. Ah. good to see you writing for Muse this week, Carrie! This puts me in mind a little bit of your fellow Texan Edie Brickell's song about the shallow water, though hers is a poke at shallow living and yours is more of a cautionary and encouraging piece.

  2. I've been through this, "The reasons we fell in love can evaporate to clouds," made me think, why did we fall in love? Is it still there and we've tired of it? Did it dissolve into the air? Lots of things it could be.
Thank you for hosting, nice pictures. Very tempting, each one.

  3. Dont stop searching. A good note on which to end this cautionary poem. It was getting to be so scary.

    Happy Sunday

  5. Cautionary and beguiling at the same time. Really related to the line about holding on to the side--that is me, much of the time.

  6. The deep end can be dangerous but, that is how we learn to swim through the currents of life. I really enjoyed this and it spoke to me this morning. Perhaps, its best to wade in with caution.

  7. It's a matter of knowing when to let go and when to hold on that holds the secret to life. An absorbing piece, Carrie.

  8. There is always such wisdom in your writes, Carrie, and told with such gentle beautiful imagery. Like this line:
"The reasons we fell in love can evaporate to clouds."

  10. ""The reasons we fell in love can evaporate to clouds"

So true. All dives have their dangers, shallow or deep. I keep searching.

  11. Wise words, Carrie. Once you realize there is no escaping darkness that clouds the water as it is the way of things, there is a sense of relief in the acceptance and a knowledge that one is strong enough to go on, no matter what.

  12. Truth spoken so poetically and with such wisdom. We never know when we leap if we can survive the water, but most of us do and become stronger swimmers.
