Containing the Stars

"Science has made us gods even before we are worthy of being men."
 ~Jean Rostand

It has been whispered in my ear yet forever is such a mighty word we use with such frequent casualty flinging it around like a kite on display

with the recklessness of dreamers and earnestness of poets

as if we could truly contain the stars in a tin can

we chase forever's essence as if it could be caught

it has been written before me yet religion is such a fragile word

we say with such power

shuffling it around on desk tops like legal documents

with the harshness of scientists and disregard of fools

as if we could truly contain the stars in a tin can

we try to see the face of God

ignorant to the revelation that we have already seen the sparkle in His eyes.

This is an old poem that I wrote a long time ago, but I felt it fit the prompt so well that  I thought I would re-post it and share it again.  The subject of God and science has always been so controversial.  So many do not agree, and even more just only have faith in what they can see with their own two eyes, and touch with their own hands.  This life is a beautiful mystery indeed, and we are all seekers of the truth, but we learn more when we open up our hearts than when we open up any text book in our reach.

  1. The poem is beautiful. Both sides lead to the same idea of stars in a tin can when the truth seems to me always to be both/and. Love "we have already seen the sparkle in His eyes." Thanks.

  2. Carrie, I am so happy to see you here at Mid-Week Motif. I miss you, as the circles I move in are of necessity restricted, given time restraints. I so love this poem - also the photo showing the stars in a human hand - makes me think of those who say we are made of stardust. I especially love the quote by Jean Rostand which I had not heard before. So true. Thanks for this wise offering today.

  4. Dear Carrie,
I hadn't come across your writing before, but am glad to be here now.
This is sublime, almost like the subject itself.
So glad you decided to recycle.
And the Jean Rostand quote [whoever he is] sums up my own poem [that I struggled over], with such ease and brevity.
This was a good morning. Thanks.

  6. Our national poet Allama Mohammed Iqbal wrote at length about the Philosophy of life Self Faith Education and Science. He wrote about the Universe and particularly about Nature.' staron se aage jahan or bhi hain- abhi ishq ke imtehaan or bhi hain'
There are other worlds beyond the visible stars and there are more tests for the Purity of Faith and Love
Your poem reminds the reader that Truth is before us if we have the heart awakened and the inner eye open...Thank you for sharing.
